Apostille Confirmation of Documents

An apostille is a method of international validation of official documents. The logic of international validation is that each state confirms through its competent authority that a given document or its validation has been carried out by the relevant state authority or official of its country. This is necessary to prevent fraud, as foreign state authorities cannot independently verify and know whether the signature and seal on the presented document truly belong to the competent authority of that country. Thus, an apostille certifies the authenticity of the signature on the official document, the official position of the person who signed the document, and, in appropriate cases, the authenticity of the seal or stamp. It does not certify the truthfulness of the content of the document.

An apostille allows documents issued in the Republic of Armenia to be used in foreign countries without additional diplomatic or consular legalization. The procedure for apostille validation is established by the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961, on the Abolition of the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents, to which the Republic of Armenia is also a participant.

Which documents can be validated with an apostille?

Documents issued by the competent authorities of the Republic of Armenia can be validated with an apostille, including:

- Birth, marriage, divorce, and death certificates.
- Judicial acts and other official documents issued by courts.
- Educational documents, including diplomas, certificates, and relevant references.
- Extracts from the state register of legal entities and other official documents regarding registration.
- Documents certified by notarial means.
- References and other official documents issued by state and local self-government bodies.

The possibility of apostille validation of a document is determined by its type, form, and the requirements established by legislation.

Documents issued by foreign states are not validated with Armenian apostilles in the Republic of Armenia.

In which cases is an apostille necessary?

Apostille validation may be necessary when a document issued in the Republic of Armenia needs to be presented abroad, particularly:

- To register a marriage in a foreign state.
- For obtaining citizenship or residence rights.
- For continuing education or employment abroad.
- For presenting documents in foreign banks or other financial institutions.
- For registering a company or conducting business activities in a foreign state.
- For presenting documents in foreign courts or state authorities.

The necessity of an apostille depends on the country of use of the document, the type of document, and the requirements of the receiving authority.

Apostille and document translation

In some cases, it is also necessary to translate an apostille-validated document into the relevant language for use abroad. Depending on the requirements of the receiving authority, notarization of the translation or additional formalities may be required. Therefore, it is advisable to determine the sequence of apostille validation and translation of the document by clarifying the requirements of the receiving institution in advance.

Apostille or consular legalization?

An apostille is applied between states that are parties to the Hague Convention of 1961. If the document is intended for use in a state where the Convention is not applicable, consular legalization or another validation procedure may be necessary. At the same time, some international treaties may provide for the acceptance of official documents without apostille or consular legalization. Therefore, in each case, it is necessary to consider the country of use of the document and the applicable international treaties.

Documents validated with apostille are accepted in the following countries:
